President Droupadi Murmu touched down in Imphal on Thursday, embarking on a two-day visit to Manipur. Upon arrival, she was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at the airport before proceeding to Lok Bhavan, the governor's residence. The President's itinerary includes a visit to the historic Imphal Polo ground, Mapal Kangjeibung, where she will witness a polo match. She is also scheduled to attend a Manipur government reception, lay foundation stones, and inaugurate various developmental projects. On Friday, President Murmu will pay tribute to Manipur's brave women freedom fighters and travel to the Senapati district, where she will address a public gathering and launch development initiatives. This visit comes ahead of December 12, which commemorates Nupi Lal – an annual celebration of two women-led uprisings against British colonial rule in 1904 and 1939. Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023, which has left at least 260 people dead and displaced 60,000. The clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have been particularly severe, prompting the dismissal of the state government in February and the imposition of President's Rule. Despite a heavy deployment of security personnel, sporadic violence has continued, underscoring the need for a lasting solution to the crisis. President Murmu's visit is seen as an attempt to address the underlying issues and promote peace in the region.
