Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has sparked controversy with his comments on Operation Sindoor, a military engagement with Pakistan in May. The former Maharashtra chief minister claimed that India was defeated on the first day of the operation, with Indian aircraft being shot down by Pakistani forces. Chavan's remarks, made at an event in Pune earlier this week, have drawn strong reactions from the BJP. The party's spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla, accused Rahul Gandhi of revealing his "mindset" by not acting against party members who make such comments. However, the Congress has sought to distance itself from Chavan's remarks. Lok Sabha MP Sukhdeo Bhagat stated that the party supports the government in the fight against terrorism and Pakistan. Chavan remains defiant, saying he has "nothing to apologise for" and that his comments were not wrong. The controversy revolves around Chavan's claim that India was defeated on the first day of Operation Sindoor, with Indian aircraft being shot down by Pakistani forces. The military conflict occurred after initial Indian strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, in which the Indian forces said that they killed over 100 terrorists. The operation ended on May 10 after a ceasefire understanding was reached between the two countries. Chavan's comments have sparked debate, with some questioning the accuracy of his claims and others defending his right to express his opinion.
