Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of independent foreign policies and energy cooperation during a joint press conference in New Delhi on Friday. The high-profile meeting came amidst US pressure on India to stop buying oil from Moscow. Putin stated that it's 'entirely natural' for Russia and India to have close economic ties, which he said will continue to grow. He also emphasized Russia's commitment to supplying India with energy resources, including oil, gas, and coal. In a significant move, Putin announced that Russian companies will participate in the 'Make in India' program, manufacturing goods in the country. The two leaders also highlighted the expansion of cultural and educational exchanges between the two nations. The nuclear power sector is another key area of cooperation, with Russia building the largest nuclear power plant in Kudankulam, India. Once operational, the plant will provide a significant contribution to India's clean and affordable energy needs. The meeting between Putin and Modi assumes importance as the US imposed 50% tariffs on most Indian products in August, citing India's continued purchases of Russian oil. India has maintained that it has the sovereign right to trade as it sees fit, in line with its national interests. Modi thanked Putin for his commitment to India and highlighted energy security as a crucial pillar of the India-Russia partnership. The two leaders agreed on an economic cooperation program until 2030, which aims to diversify, balance, and sustain trade and investment between the two nations.
