In a significant crackdown on the illicit trafficking of codeine-based cough syrup, the Raebareli police have arrested Priyanshu Gautam, a man linked to the banned substance. The arrest comes after a complaint from the Drug Inspector, who had been monitoring the situation. Gautam has been sent to judicial custody, a move welcomed by local politicians who are demanding swift and decisive action against those involved. The case echoes a similar incident in the past, where Divakar Singh, the owner of Ajay Pharma, was arrested for supplying the toxic cough syrup. In response to the latest development, a case number 335/25 has been registered. Politicians from the Samajwadi Party, including MLA Mukesh Verma and Brajesh Yadav, have expressed outrage over the issue, questioning the involvement of high-profile individuals and demanding action against those responsible for the lives lost. The MLA has also called for the homes of those involved to be bulldozed, citing the loss of innocent lives. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has assured the public that the Uttar Pradesh Police and Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) are working together to initiate action under the NDPS Act. The crackdown is seen as a significant step towards tackling the issue of toxic cough syrup being sold in the market, with many politicians calling for the immediate detention and prosecution of those involved.
