Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has clarified that passengers will need to pay extra for carrying luggage beyond the free allowance limits while traveling by train. In response to a question from MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, Vaishnaw revealed that class-wise maximum limits have been set for carrying luggage inside train compartments. According to the Railway Minister, the free allowance and maximum limits for luggage vary depending on the class of travel. For example, Second Class passengers can carry up to 35 kg of luggage for free, while Sleeper Class passengers can carry up to 40 kg for free. Passengers traveling in AC 3 Tier or Chair Car can also carry up to 40 kg of luggage for free. If passengers need to carry more luggage than the free allowance, they can book and pay for the excess luggage at a rate of 1.5 times the standard luggage rate. The maximum limit for carrying excess luggage includes the free allowance. The Railway Minister also clarified that certain items, such as trunks, suitcases, and boxes with outside measurements exceeding 100 cmx60cmx25 cm, cannot be carried in passenger compartments and must be booked in brake vans or parcel vans. Merchandised items are also not allowed to be booked and carried in passenger compartments as personal luggage. Excess luggage beyond the prescribed limit is carried in the brake van of the trains, subject to the maximum limit prescribed for booking in brake vans as luggage.
