Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has strongly condemned the racial abuse that led to the murder of 20-year-old Anjel Chakma from Tripura in Dehradun. In a statement on social media, Sangma described the incident as 'heartbreaking and unacceptable.' He emphasized that such acts of racial violence undermine the principles of equality and unity that are fundamental to Indian society. Sangma, who is also the president of the National People's Party (NPP), stressed that people from the North East are as much a part of India as any other citizen. He called for collective efforts to ensure that individuals from the region receive the dignity, safety, and justice they deserve across the country. The Meghalaya Chief Minister expressed his condolences to Anjel's family and vowed that justice will be served without delay. His party, the NPP, has been working closely with regional forces across the North East to promote unity and understanding. In a separate statement, Shillong Lajong FC, a prominent football club in Meghalaya, condemned the incident and emphasized the importance of pride in one's Indian identity. The club noted that being referred to as 'Oriental' or 'Chinese' may not be inherently derogatory in today's globalized world, but stressed that every individual from the North East must prioritize their Indian heritage. Sangma's statement and the condemnation by Shillong Lajong FC reflect a growing concern among North Easterners about racial violence and the need for greater awareness and understanding of their experiences.
