The All India Shia Personal Law Board is set to convene on December 28 in Lucknow, where key issues including the Uniform Civil Code, alleged corruption in waqf boards, and minority rights will be up for discussion. The meeting, which will also condemn terrorism and hate speech, will see the participation of clerics, intellectuals, and community representatives from across the country. According to the board, the convention will review the socio-economic status of Shia Muslims and discuss ways to strengthen educational and religious institutions within the community. The delegates will also deliberate on proposals to curb extravagant spending on marriages and mourning ceremonies. Notably, Uttarakhand recently implemented the Uniform Civil Code, becoming the first state in India to do so. The board will also discuss the formation of a separate panel to assess the condition of Shia Muslims and allocate minority welfare benefits in proportion to their population. Shia Personal Law Board president Maulana Syed Saem Mehdi and general secretary Maulana Yasoob Abbas stated that the convention will also consider demands for job reservation, representation in Parliament and state legislatures, and proposals for social reforms. Other key issues to be discussed include alleged corruption in waqf boards, the sale of waqf properties, and opposition to restrictions on wearing the hijab. The convention is scheduled to begin at 11 am at the Asafi Imambara in Lucknow.
