Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a major expansion plan to double train capacity in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Kochi by 2030. The Southern Railway aims to meet growing demand and reduce congestion by upgrading coaching terminals, adding platforms, and enhancing operational capacities. As part of the strategy, Chennai's Egmore station will undergo significant redevelopment, featuring airport-like passenger separation and modern amenities. Tambaram station will also receive upgrades, including new lifts and improved integration for suburban services. A new Perambur terminal will be built to decongest Central and Egmore stations. In Coimbatore, Podanur Junction will become a second terminal with a ₹100 crore investment in stabling and pit lines. The city's North station will also be redeveloped with new entries and amenities. Kochi, a key railway hub, will see the redevelopment of Ernakulam Town Railway station in two phases at a total cost of ₹150.28 crore. The project will ensure uninterrupted passenger operations during construction. The upgrades are expected to improve nationwide connectivity, reduce congestion, and support growing commercial, industrial, and tourism activities in the region. The Southern Railway has identified 48 major cities for this time-bound capacity doubling, with Chennai and Coimbatore among the top priority areas.
