The Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court to challenge a Madras High Court order allowing devotees to light a traditional lamp at a temple near a dargah. The Supreme Court has agreed to consider the plea, which is a response to a High Court order that dismissed an appeal by the district collector and police commissioner. The High Court had ruled that the temple must light the lamp at the Deepathoon, a stone pillar, as part of its customary rituals. However, the state government claims that this order infringes on the rights of the adjacent dargah and Muslim community. The Supreme Court has taken note of the state government's plea and will consider listing it for a hearing. The move comes after a single judge bench of the High Court allowed devotees to light the lamp, citing the temple's duty to do so. The state government's decision to move to the Supreme Court has been met with criticism from the respondents, who claim the government is creating 'unnecessary drama'. The Supreme Court has yet to make a final decision on the matter.
