A 32-year-old activist, who had been fighting for a 42% quota for other backward classes (OBCs) in education and employment, died after setting himself ablaze in Telangana's Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The incident sparked widespread protests across the city, with OBC organisations demanding justice from the state government. The activist, a cab driver by profession, had been actively participating in OBC organisations and had been in talks with prominent OBC leader and MLC Chintapandu Naveen, alias Teenmaar Mallanna, to discuss the quota issue. However, when he found out that Mallanna was not available, he became agitated and set himself ablaze. The police initially kept Mallanna under house arrest to prevent him from leading a procession to the activist's residence, citing concerns over public safety. However, Mallanna argued that he had a right to meet with the people and express their demands. The activist's death has been met with outrage from OBC organisations, who have taken to the streets to demand justice and immediate implementation of the 42% quota. The police have resorted to mild force and carried out mass arrests, with several leaders and activists detained at multiple police stations. The incident has raised questions about the state government's handling of the quota issue and the rights of OBC communities. As protests continue to spread across the city, the activist's family and supporters are demanding that the government take immediate action to address their demands.
