Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced overnight storms and intermittent rain, starting Thursday evening, with thunderstorm activity expected to intensify across the region from Friday.

Phones buzzed with emergency weather alerts several times from Thursday night in Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, warning residents of severe thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to intense rain.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the region, warning of rain, lightning, and strong winds.

The prevailing conditions are also expected to bring relief from the heat, with temperatures likely to dip over the next few days under the influence of cloud cover and rainfall.

The IMD has advised people to move to safe buildings, avoid weak structures, stay away from windows, refrain from taking shelter under trees, and avoid venturing near water bodies during adverse weather conditions.

The sudden change in weather conditions has been triggered by a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining areas, which has enhanced atmospheric instability over northwest India, including Delhi-NCR.
