Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee called for 50% women in Lok Sabha seats, including the Prime Minister's post, during a special session on women's reservation in legislatures.
He argued that women's reservation can be implemented in a single day without delimitation, and that the BJP-led government's proposal to base delimitation on the 2011 census is a 'political gimmick.'
Banerjee also pointed out that the BJP's internal record shows only 12.91% of its Lok Sabha MPs are women, and 16.98% of its Rajya Sabha MPs, a lower ratio than in the TMC.
He cited historical delimitation exercises and said the government's proposal breaks precedent by bypassing the ongoing 2026 census.
