The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to gain a significant boost in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha following the decision of 20 lawmakers from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a separate group.
The move is expected to make it easier for the ruling coalition to pass contentious bills, including the Delimitation Bill, the 129th Constitution Amendment Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The BJP currently has 293 members in the 543-member Lok Sabha and 149 in the 245-member Rajya Sabha. The TMC's decision will increase the NDA's strength in the Lok Sabha and provide a majority in the Rajya Sabha.
The BJP has also received "feelers" from the DMK, which has distanced itself from the INDIA bloc, to support the NDA. However, the DMK has refuted reports of aligning with the NDA, stating that they will take a decision based on the merit of the bills.
The move is seen as a significant development in the Indian political landscape, with the BJP looking to strengthen its position ahead of the next assembly polls and Lok Sabha elections.
