The Tamil Nadu BJP chief, Nainar Nagenthran, was detained by police on Thursday after he attempted to light the 'Karthigai Deepam' oil lamp on a stone pillar atop the Thirupparankundram hill in Madurai. Nagenthran was accompanied by several Hindutva activists, including petitioner Rama Ravikumar. According to police, when the group tried to reach the hilltop, they were informed that the government was preparing to appeal against the High Court order allowing the lamp to be lit. Despite this, the group refused to disperse, and they were eventually taken away by police. The incident has sparked a heated debate between the ruling DMK and the BJP. DMK state minister S. Regupathy accused the BJP of trying to disturb the peace in Tamil Nadu, stating that the party's communal influence would be kept at bay under Chief Minister MK Stalin's leadership. The BJP and its ally, the AIADMK, have hit back at the DMK, with AIADMK general secretary Edapaddi K. Palaniswami (EPS) demanding the immediate release of those arrested and implementation of the court's order. Former state BJP chief K. Annamalai questioned the DMK's motives, stating that the party was pitting people against each other to further their appeasement politics. Senior BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan called for the Tamil Nadu government to respect the High Court's verdict and allow the centuries-old ritual to take place. The controversy has raised questions about the DMK's handling of the situation and its commitment to upholding the law. As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the Karthigai Deepam row has exposed deep divisions within Tamil Nadu's political landscape.
