A 24-year-old student from Tripura, Angel Chakma, has succumbed to injuries suffered in a brutal racist attack in Dehradun. The incident occurred on December 9, when Chakma was allegedly attacked with a sharp object and a kadaa (bracelet) during a quarrel with a group of people at a canteen. According to his friends, Chakma stood up to the attackers, saying 'We are not Chinese... We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?' However, this led to a vicious assault, leaving him critically injured. Chakma was hospitalized for 17 days before passing away on Friday. Following his death, police added murder charges to the FIR, and five people have been apprehended in connection with the case. Another accused, reportedly from Nepal, may have fled to his native country. The incident began when Chakma and his brother were at a canteen near a liquor shop. A group, including Suraj Khwas, Avinash Negi, and Sumit, was also present, and a fight broke out after one of them allegedly made a comment about Chakma. The police reviewed CCTV footage and gathered information from witnesses to identify the perpetrators. Four of the accused have been sent to jail, while two minors were sent to a correctional home. The police have worked diligently to investigate the case, and their efforts have led to the arrest of five people. The case highlights the need for greater awareness and action against racism in India.
