While Trump's move is seen as a bid to appease American farmers ahead of the election, industry insiders claim it will ultimately hurt American consumers rather than dent Indian rice exports. Rice exporters in India say the demand for their product in the US is driven by consumer preferences, with Indian rice enjoying a unique position in the American market. Dev Garg, vice president of the Indian Rice Exporters Federation, points out that Indian rice offers a distinct flavour, texture, and colour profile that American-grown rice cannot replicate. "The US market's rice imports are entirely demand-driven," Garg said. "Indian rice has a distinct flavour, texture, and colour palette, and American-grown rice is not a like-for-like substitute.
