The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement is set to transform the business landscape in the first half of 2026, according to British Deputy High Commissioner Andrew Fleming. The historic pact, spanning over 20,000 pages, aims to unlock opportunities for businesses of all sizes, particularly exporters in West Bengal and the 12 states in East and Northeast India. Fleming described the agreement as the most comprehensive and ambitious deal negotiated by both governments, offering duty-free access for 99% of Indian products in the UK market. This includes labour-intensive sectors like textiles, leather, and gems and jewellery, as well as high-growth sectors like engineering goods and auto components. The pact is expected to double bilateral trade in goods and services to USD 112 billion from USD 56 billion, with Indian exporters gaining significant benefits. The agreement also addresses services, a core strength of the Indian economy, and includes a unique chapter on women and gender, which will empower artisans and MSMEs in West Bengal. Fleming urged regional businesses to prepare for the upcoming benefits, stating that the first half of 2026 is the expected timeline for the roll-out of the agreement. The pact aligns with the 'Vision 2035' roadmap for deeper ties between the two nations, covering information technology, financial services, education, telecom, and engineering. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has previously noted that the free trade agreement will serve as a catalyst for inclusive growth, benefiting farmers, artisans, and innovators while safeguarding India's core interests. The India-UK CETA is set to revolutionize business ties between the two nations, marking a new era in their partnership.
