In a shocking revelation, the Allahabad High Court has expressed its concerns over the casual handling of Prevention of Corruption Act cases in Uttar Pradesh. The court has directed the state's Principal Secretary and DGP to investigate the matter and issue necessary guidelines to prevent such irregularities in the future. The case in question involves Suresh Prakash Gautam, a labour enforcement officer who was caught red-handed demanding a bribe from a complainant. An FIR was lodged against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. However, the court found several discrepancies in the trap proceedings, including the failure to wash the hands of the accused and the complainant at the spot where the trap was set, and the absence of a recovery memo. The court also noted that Gautam had filed an application on August 14, 2025, claiming that he was being falsely implicated in a case. The court observed that the record suggests that Gautam's hands and the complainant's hands were not washed at the spot where the trap was set, and the bribe money was not sealed at the spot. The court has directed the Principal Secretary and DGP of Uttar Pradesh to look into the matter and issue necessary directions to prevent such irregularities in the future. The Registrar General of the court has been asked to forward a copy of the order to the Principal Secretary and Director General of Police, Government of U.P., for necessary compliance. This order is a significant step towards ensuring that the Prevention of Corruption Act cases are handled in a fair and transparent manner in Uttar Pradesh. The court's direction to the state authorities is expected to bring about a change in the way these cases are investigated and prosecuted in the state.
