In a shocking case of road extortion, six people have been arrested in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly forcing motorists to pay for high-visibility stickers. The accused, who were posing as police officers, would stop vehicles and demand money in exchange for reflective stickers. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Alok Gupta, the group was active near Kisan Inter College in Ballia, where they would target unsuspecting drivers. The victims were threatened with violence if they refused to pay. The operation began when a local resident, Rameshwar Singh Dabbu, filed a complaint against seven unidentified people for extortion. Following the complaint, police arrested Anuj Giri and Mandeep Maurya from Kahinaur village, along with four others from Azamgarh district and Gajenderpur village. During the raid, police seized over 284 collection slips, three bundles of reflective stickers, six mobile phones, and ₹12,530 in cash. The Uttar Pradesh government had recently directed authorities to distribute reflective tapes to reduce accidents during foggy conditions. The police are now on the lookout for a police constable and a home guard suspected to be involved in the extortion racket.
