In a joint effort to combat terrorism, India and the United States have called for stricter global sanctions against notorious terror outfits Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), along with their supporters and backers. This move aims to freeze their assets, impose travel bans, and ban arms sales worldwide. The two nations met in New Delhi on December 3 to discuss counter-terrorism strategies, emphasizing the need for a sustained and comprehensive approach. They also sought additional designations of ISIS and al-Qa'ida affiliates under the UN 1267 sanctions regime. India's Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the US State Department's decision to designate The Resistance Front, a LeT proxy, as a foreign terrorist organization. The TRF was responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack. The joint statement released after the meeting condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism. It also expressed concern over the growing use of drones, AI, and other technologies for terrorist purposes. India and the US reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation, including in the UN, Quad, and the Financial Action Task Force. They called for accountability for those responsible for terrorism and discussed ways to enhance law enforcement and judicial cooperation. The meeting was led by Vinod Bahade, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, and Monica Jacobsen, Senior Bureau Official in the Bureau of Counterterrorism in the US Department of State.
