A US Representative has sharply criticized President Trump's policies towards India, saying they are 'cutting off the nose to spite the face'. Speaking at a congressional hearing, Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove pointed to a photo of PM Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin as evidence of Trump's approach driving India into Russia's arms. The Representative warned that Trump's policies are not only damaging the US-India partnership but also harming American interests. She emphasized the need for urgent action to mitigate the damage and restore cooperation between the two nations. Fresh tensions between the US and India emerged after Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on Indian rice exports, accusing India of 'dumping' cheap rice into the American market. A US trade delegation is currently in India for negotiations, but disagreements over market access and tariffs have hindered progress. The US had previously imposed 50% tariffs on most Indian goods in August 2025, amid broader trade disputes and concerns over India's Russian oil purchases. Trump's latest warning has added uncertainty to already strained negotiations, increasing the risk of further trade friction between the two countries.
