Uttar Pradesh has launched a massive crackdown on the illicit trade of codeine-based cough syrups, identifying over a dozen key suspects allegedly involved in the organised network. The state police and Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) have registered over 128 FIRs against establishments and their operators, marking the largest-ever action against illegal pharmaceutical trafficking in the state. Investigations, led by a special investigation team (SIT), have revealed a well-coordinated network involving manufacturers, distributors, transporters, and local operators across multiple districts and states. The SIT, headed by Inspector General of Police L R Kumar, is probing the racket's organised nature and wider ramifications. Following incidents of codeine syrup misuse in other states, the Uttar Pradesh government stepped up enforcement, initiating raids at multiple locations to apprehend those identified. Investigators are examining financial transactions, inter-state linkages, and possible diversion of legally manufactured cough syrup into the illegal market. Chief Minister's firm stance has directed that no person involved, regardless of position or influence, should be spared. Further arrests and disclosures are expected as searches and seizures continue.
