Actor and politician Vijay's highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan has been caught in the midst of a bitter political battle in Tamil Nadu. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has refused to grant a certificate to the film, which was originally scheduled for release on January 9. Vijay's supporters claim a sinister plot by the ruling party, while his opponents point fingers at the actor's fledgling party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). One of Vijay's close advisors compared the situation to that of former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran, who faced similar challenges in 1973 when his film Ulagam Sutrum Valiban was delayed due to his expulsion from the DMK. Political observers believe the BJP may be using the situation to create divisions within the opposition DMK and AIADMK parties. 'This is an opportunity for the BJP to tie Vijay up in knots,' said political analyst Ramu Manivannan. The DMK, however, dismissed the allegations, stating that the CBFC is an independent body under the Centre and cannot be influenced by the state government. 'What is the connection between this film and us when the censor board is under the Centre?' asked Minister K N Nehru. Vijay's history of pre-release issues dates back to 2013, when his film Thalaivaa was stalled under the AIADMK regime. This time around, the DMK's ally Congress has also jumped into the fray, accusing the BJP of using the censor board as a 'political weapon.' BJP's Tamilisai Soundararajan countered that the Congress was misleading people by blaming the Centre for the film's certification delay, stating that the central government has no role in the censor board's decisions. As the Madras High Court is set to hear the matter on Friday, the controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan continues to simmer, reflecting the deepening divisions in Tamil Nadu's politics.
