Bollywood Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife, Shwetambari, were remanded to a week-long police custody by a local court in Udaipur on Tuesday. The couple was arrested on December 7 in Mumbai and brought to Udaipur for questioning in connection with an alleged ₹30 crore fraud case. Their arrest followed a complaint lodged by Dr Ajay Murdia, who claimed that the couple and six others cheated him out of the large sum by promising to produce films, including a biopic on his late wife. The accused allegedly promised Dr Murdia that his investment would yield profits of ₹100-200 crore, but instead, generated fake bills to siphon off the money. According to the FIR, the accused convinced Dr Murdia to invest ₹7 crore initially, promising to produce four films for ₹47 crore. However, they failed to deliver, and the entire amount was allegedly misappropriated. A police team led by Deputy SP Chhagan Rajpurohit traveled to Mumbai to arrest the couple, who will now be grilled for seven days to recover crucial documents and electronic evidence from their office in Mumbai. They are set to appear in court again on December 16.
