Guwahati: The situation in West Karbi Anglong district has slowly begun to stabilize after a violent outburst earlier this week, which left 173 security personnel injured. The clashes occurred on December 22-23, with police saying that 139 personnel received first aid at the scene, while 34 were rushed to hospitals for further treatment. The unrest was sparked by a 15-day hunger strike by members of the Karbi community, who were demanding the eviction of alleged illegal settlers from grazing reserve lands in the tribal belts. The situation escalated on Monday when police took away three protesters from the site, reportedly for medical treatment. However, the administration claimed they were hospitalized for their own safety. The Kheroni area witnessed widespread violence on Tuesday, resulting in the death of one person in police firing and another who was burned alive inside his house. The state government had initiated an eviction process last year but was forced to halt it after a petition was filed in the Gauhati High Court. A tripartite meeting was held on Friday between the state government, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, and the protesters, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assuring that the government would move the court to lift the stay on eviction in grazing lands. Security forces have maintained a strict vigil in the districts, with prohibitory orders in place and internet services suspended.
