In a major milestone, the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), a public sector steelmaker, has achieved the highest-ever hot metal production in a single day, exceeding its rated capacity. On December 14, the plant produced 21,012 metric tonnes of hot metal, a feat that marks a significant operational breakthrough for the company. The historic achievement comes despite ongoing worker protests against the proposed privatization of the plant and a recent infusion of ₹11,000 crore from the Centre. According to an official statement, the plant has shown sustained improvement in production, with an average hot metal output of approximately 19,450 MT per day in December 2025, close to 92% of its full capacity. The ramp-up in production reflects enhanced operational stability, improved raw material availability, and renewed production discipline, the statement said. Sandeep Poundrik, secretary of the Union Ministry of Steel, congratulated the RINL team on achieving the record output and expressed confidence that the company will soon reach 100% average production on a sustained basis. The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, India's first shore-based integrated steel plant with an installed capacity of 7.3 million tonnes of liquid steel per annum, is a critical supplier of value-added steel products to sectors such as infrastructure, construction, railways, shipbuilding, and defence. After facing financial stress due to high input costs, volatility in steel prices, legacy debt, and working capital constraints, the plant is now firmly positioned on a path of recovery and growth, the statement added.
