Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has praised Kerala's Vizhinjam Port, which has emerged as a major maritime hub amid the Strait of Hormuz crisis. With around 100 ships lined up at the port, Thiruvananthapuram's Vizhinjam Port has become a crucial shipping destination.

Tharoor wrote on X that Vizhinjam is India's 'transshipment answer to the world' and has handled its 1 millionth twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) in record time. The port is currently fast-tracking Phase II of its expansion.

Vizhinjam International Deepwater Seaport, India's first deepwater transhipment port, was conceptualised in 1991 and has overcome numerous hurdles to become a global hub for shipping. The port is operated by the Adani Group and is a facility where cargo containers are transferred from one ship to another before continuing to their final destination.

Tharoor said that Vizhinjam is a 'global necessity' and has become a reliable gateway for shipping solutions. The port has handled 61 vessels in the last month alone, a new record, and has 100 berthing calls pending. Expansion is underway to accommodate 5 motherships simultaneously.
