West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the state government will remove the word 'dham' from the Digha Jagannath temple complex in East Midnapore district's Digha, following a request from Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

The decision comes after a long-standing dispute between the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal and the BJP-led government in Odisha over the nomenclature of the shrine.

The Digha temple complex, built on the architectural lines of the iconic 12th-century Jagannath Temple in Puri, was inaugurated in April 2025 and has been a major bone of contention between the two states.

Adhikari stated that the word 'dham', which was added to the complex by the previous government, is not in accordance with the Sanatan culture and will be dropped soon.

The puja of the holy trinity of Lord Janannath and his siblings will continue following Sanatan culture and traditions, and the complex will be known as a cultural centre.
