The Lionel Messi Kolkata fiasco has sparked a heated controversy, with the Argentine football legend's brief visit to India marred by chaos and vandalism at the Salt Lake Stadium. While the tour's other stops in Mumbai and Delhi were successful, the Kolkata leg turned violent, with fans damaging the stadium and invading the pitch. In the aftermath, former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly was linked to the incident by Uttam Saha, president of the Argentina Fan Club of Kolkata. Saha claimed that Ganguly had played a role in organizing Messi's visit, but Ganguly's presence at the stadium was limited to a separate section, away from the chaos. Ganguly has since filed a defamation case against Saha, seeking ₹50 crore in compensation. However, Saha remains defiant, vowing to defend his club's reputation. "We will not spare anyone, including Sourav Ganguly, if anything goes wrong on the football ground," Saha told ANI. The controversy led to the resignation of West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee taking temporary charge of the portfolio. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the incident. Despite the rocky start, Messi's tour proceeded smoothly, with stops in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi before concluding with a visit to the Vantara animal sanctuary in Jamnagar prior to departure.
