Chess World Cup Sparks Controversy: Lithuanian GM Flags Rule Breach by Indian Challenger
Even a third arbiter was involved in settling the dispute, which was quickly settled, and then the game resumed as Pranav V received a formal warning.
A heated dispute erupted during the ongoing Chess World Cup 2025 in Goa, as Lithuanian Grandmaster Titas Stremavicius lodged a complaint against Indian challenger Pranav V over a rules breach. Pranav was accused of failing to record moves on his scoresheet, a requirement under the tournament's rules.
The issue was brought to the attention of a third arbiter, who intervened to resolve the matter. Pranav received a formal warning, and the game continued, ultimately resulting in his victory. He is now leading in the third-round match.
This controversy comes amidst a strong performance from Indian players. Arjun Erigaisi and Pentala Harikrishna secured wins with white pieces, while D Gukesh drew his match with black. Erigaisi defeated Shamsiddin Vokhidov in just 30 moves, and Harikrishna beat Daniel Dardha in 25 moves.
A total of 10 Indians have advanced to the third round of the FIDE World Cup 2025, a knockout tournament featuring 206 players from 82 countries. Several high-profile players, including Ian Nepomniachtchi, Wesley So, and Hans Niemann, have already been eliminated from the competition.
