Mumbai: Mirra Andreeva, the 19-year-old Russian tennis sensation, fulfilled her prophecy by becoming a Grand Slam champion at the French Open. She lifted the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen Trophy after beating Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the women's singles final.
Andreeva's victory marked a dominant display of tennis, with the eighth-seeded Russian showcasing her explosive power and control. She won the next nine games in a row after a change in tactic, which helped her switch gears and push Chwalinska out of her comfort zone.
The teen hit 25 winners to her opponent's 10 and conceded fewer unforced errors (26-29). Andreeva's steely focus and steady performance ultimately led to her first championship point, which she converted with a short backhand cross-court winner.
With this victory, Andreeva became the youngest champion at the French Open since Monica Seles won her third title at the age of 18 in 1992. She can thank herself for it, as she has been thanking herself after each victory throughout the tournament.
