World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has expressed her concerns about the fairness of transgender women competing in WTA Tour events. In an appearance on Piers Morgan's show, Sabalenka stated that while she has nothing against transgender athletes, she believes they retain a physical advantage over women who have not undergone gender transition. Sabalenka emphasized that female athletes have spent their entire careers working to reach their limits, only to face off against individuals who are biologically stronger. She argued that this creates an unfair competitive environment. The WTA allows transgender women to compete if they meet specific criteria, including maintaining low testosterone levels for two years and confirming their female or non-binary identity. Notably, no top transgender woman is currently competing at a prominent level on the women's tour. Renee Richards, a pioneering transgender athlete, competed in the 1970s and 1980s after her transition from male to female. Her journey highlights the complexities surrounding gender and elite competition in sports. Sabalenka's comments on the issue come as she prepares to face Nick Kyrgios in an exhibition match dubbed 'The Battle of the Sexes' in Dubai later this month. The Belarusian tennis star's stance on the matter has sparked a wider discussion about the role of transgender athletes in women's sports.
