US President Donald Trump has sent a stern message to the Iranian national football team, expressing concerns over their participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Trump cited security worries as the primary reason, given the escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to take place in the US, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
The Iran national football team is scheduled to play in Los Angeles and Seattle, but their participation is now uncertain. Iran's sports minister, Ahmad Donyamali, has stated that it would be impossible for Iranian athletes to take part in the tournament due to the recent airstrikes carried out by the US and Israel.
Trump has also weighed in on the case of Iranian women footballers who sought asylum in Australia, calling for them to be granted asylum. The players feared retaliation back home for not singing the national anthem before an Asian Cup match. Australia later agreed to grant asylum to the five players who decided to stay.
