Aleppo Tensions Escalate: US Mediates Amid Fierce Clashes Between Syrian Government and Kurdish Forces
SYRIA-SECURITY-ALEPPO:Clashes in Syria's Aleppo deepen rift between government, Kurdish forces
Fierce fighting between Syrian government forces and Kurdish fighters in Aleppo has forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes, deepening the rift between Damascus and Kurdish authorities. The clashes, which broke out on Tuesday, intensified on Wednesday, leaving at least four civilians dead and more than two dozen wounded.
According to Reuters reporters in the city, shelling resumed on Wednesday afternoon, despite a relative calm overnight. The Syrian army has announced that military positions in Kurdish-held neighborhoods are 'legitimate military targets,' sparking concerns of a significant military operation.
In response, the government has opened humanitarian corridors for civilians to flee flashpoint neighborhoods, with an estimated 10,000 people already displaced. Faisal Mohammad Ali, operations chief of the civil defense force in Aleppo, said that the civilians are being safely relocated to displaced shelters or their desired destinations.
The fighting has disrupted civilian life in Aleppo, closing the airport and a highway to Turkey, halting operations at factories in an industrial zone, and paralyzing major roads into the city center. The Damascus government has accused Kurdish forces of launching rocket fire, drone attacks, and shelling, while Kurdish authorities have blamed the government for the escalation.
The US has stepped in as a mediator, with meetings held as recently as Sunday to try to nudge the integration process forward. However, the talks ended without tangible progress, leaving the fate of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) integration into the central government uncertain.
Failure to integrate the SDF into Syria's army risks further violence and could potentially draw in Turkey, which has threatened an incursion against Kurdish fighters it views as terrorists. The situation in Aleppo remains volatile, with international mediation efforts underway to de-escalate the conflict.
