Bangladesh's interim government has condemned the killing of a Hindu man by a mob in Rajbari Town, dismissing claims that it was a communal attack. The government statement, issued in Bengali, described the death of Amrit Mondal alias Samrat as a 'tragic murder' and said initial investigations indicate that the incident was not motivated by religious bias. According to the statement, Mondal, who had outstanding warrants for murder and extortion, was killed during a clash with a local crowd after allegedly attempting to extort money. Police have arrested an associate of Mondal's, Selim, who was found with a foreign pistol and a pipe gun. The government has vowed to take legal action against those involved and urged the public to refrain from spreading misleading or provocative statements. This comes a week after a Hindu man was lynched in Mymensingh over blasphemy allegations, prompting international condemnation. Bangladesh's caretaker administration led by Muhammad Yunus has expressed determination to establish the rule of law and justice, while BNP leader Tarique Rahman returned to the country, emphasizing the importance of unity among Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians.
