A senior Bangladesh government official has stepped down amidst growing protests in the country following the tragic death of prominent activist Osman Hadi. Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Home Affairs, submitted his resignation, which was accepted by the President with immediate effect.
According to a gazette notification, Chowdhury's resignation was signed by Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid and issued under the President's order. The move comes as the Inqilab Moncho, a mass cultural movement, had called for Chowdhury's resignation over the government's handling of Hadi's killing.
Osman Hadi, a key figure in last year's July Uprising, was gunned down in Dhaka on December 12 while traveling in a rickshaw. His death sparked widespread protests, with activists demanding justice and the arrest of those responsible. Hadi was also being considered as a potential candidate for the upcoming national election.
Following his funeral, the Inqilab Moncho issued an ultimatum to government officials, demanding a public report on the progress of arrests in Hadi's killing. The group warned that failure to respond would result in their resignation.
The protests have continued, with activists gathering at Dhaka's Shahbagh intersection to demand justice for Hadi. The government's handling of the situation remains under scrutiny, with many calling for accountability and transparency in the investigation into Hadi's killing.
