In a chilling echo of a recent attack, unidentified gunmen have shot another youth leader in Bangladesh. Motaleb Sikder, 42, a key figure in the country's 2004 student-led uprising and leader of the National Citizen Party, was targeted near Gazi Medical College Hospital in Khulna city on Monday.
According to eyewitnesses and hospital sources, Sikder was shot in the head and was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. Miraculously, doctors say he is out of danger after the bullet entered through his ear and exited on the other side.
This incident comes just days after the tragic death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the student-led protests that led to the ouster of Bangladesh's prime minister. Hadi was shot in the head during an election campaign in central Dhaka and died while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
Sikder's role in Bangladesh's student politics is well-documented. As the Khulna Division head of the National Citizen Party and central coordinator of its workers' front, he has been a vocal advocate for student rights. His shooting has sent shockwaves across the country, raising concerns about the safety of student leaders and the increasing prevalence of violence in Bangladeshi politics.
