A 44-year-old accountant from India, Prashant Sreekumar, died in an Edmonton hospital after an 8-hour wait in the emergency room, despite complaining of severe chest pain. According to his family, Sreekumar, a father of three, was taken to Grey Nuns Community Hospital by a client after experiencing sharp pain at work. After being triaged, he was left to wait, but his condition rapidly deteriorated.
A shocking video on social media shows Sreekumar's wife describing the harrowing experience, claiming that his blood pressure soared to 210 while he waited, and he was only offered Tylenol for his 'unbearable' pain. While the authenticity of the video couldn't be verified, the family insists that Sreekumar repeatedly told hospital staff that he was in immense pain.
His father, Kumar Sreekumar, recalls his son's desperate pleas: 'Papa, I cannot bear the pain.' An ECG was conducted, but the family claims they were told nothing significant was detected. Over eight hours later, Sreekumar was called into the treatment area, where he collapsed due to apparent cardiac arrest.
The hospital, operated by Covenant Health, has referred the matter to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and extended condolences to the family. However, the family and friends are seeking answers about how a patient with severe chest pain could wait so long without medical attention. 'We expect better from the hospital and the health-care system,' said a family friend. Sreekumar leaves behind a wife and three young children, aged 3, 10, and 14.
