Prominent activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah, 44, has finally found solace in Britain after spending over a decade in and out of Egyptian prisons. The Egyptian-British campaigner, who holds dual citizenship through his mother, arrived in the UK on Friday after being released from prison following a presidential pardon in September. Abd el-Fattah's prolonged imprisonment, coupled with his repeated hunger strikes, sparked international outrage and calls for his freedom. His release comes after years of tireless efforts from his family, including his mother Laila Soueif, and international supporters. Abd el-Fattah's family confirmed his safe arrival in London, with his 14-year-old son Khaled, who lives in Brighton with his mother, set to be reunited with him shortly. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his delight at Abd el-Fattah's return, praising his family and those who campaigned for his release. Although Abd el-Fattah's name was removed from Egypt's 'terrorism' list months prior, it was only after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered authorities to study his possible pardon that he was granted freedom. The Egyptian president also faced pressure during the COP27 climate summit in 2022, where Abd el-Fattah's case was a focal point. Starmer extended gratitude to Sisi for his decision to pardon Abd el-Fattah, acknowledging the efforts of those who worked towards this moment. The return of the Egyptian-British activist marks a significant victory for human rights advocates and those who have long fought for his freedom.
