New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's choice for fire commissioner has sparked controversy, with Elon Musk warning that the appointment could have fatal consequences. Lillian Bonsignore, a 31-year veteran of the FDNY, will assume the role after Mamdani's inauguration on January 1. Bonsignore, who previously served as chief of EMS Services, will be the first openly gay commissioner and the second woman to lead the department. Mamdani praised Bonsignore's extensive record, highlighting her leadership during the 9/11 attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Musk has expressed concerns, citing that Bonsignore's experience as a non-firefighter could put lives at risk. 'Proven experience matters when lives are at stake,' Musk wrote on X. The debate over Bonsignore's appointment comes as she is set to take office at the start of the new year. Musk's criticism is the latest development in a contentious period for the FDNY commissioner role, which has seen several high-profile changes in recent years. In a separate incident, Musk had urged voters in November to support former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, criticizing Mamdani and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. The Tesla CEO's comments have raised questions about his involvement in New York City's politics and his stance on key issues.
