France and its European partners are working together to develop a joint strategy in response to the US's renewed threat to take control of Greenland. The move comes as European leaders rally behind the Arctic island, emphasizing that it belongs to its people. The US's plans, first voiced in 2019, have sparked concerns that a military operation could be used to seize the island, which Denmark has ruled out. France's Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, has stated that a US military operation is unlikely, citing a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Greenland, with a population of 57,000, is strategically located between Europe and North America, making it crucial for the US's ballistic missile defence system. Its mineral wealth also aligns with the US's goal of reducing reliance on China. The island is not an independent member of NATO but is covered by Denmark's membership. Leaders from major European powers and Canada have expressed their opposition to the US's plans, emphasizing the importance of respecting Greenland's sovereignty. The situation has rekindled concerns over the US's intentions, following a recent military operation in Venezuela. France and its allies aim to address the US's ambitions through diplomatic means, working together to develop a unified response. The issue is set to be discussed at a meeting with Germany and Poland later this week.
