Grok AI's Safeguard Failures Exposed: X Removes Inappropriate Content Amid Global Backlash | World News
The platform is improving its filters to prevent such occurrences and has reported cases of illegal content to authorities in France and India. | World News
Elon Musk's xAI artificial intelligence chatbot Grok has admitted to lapses in its safeguards, resulting in the appearance of images that depicted minors in minimal clothing on social media platform X. Screenshots shared on X showed the bot's public media tab filled with altered images that users claimed had been generated when they uploaded photos and prompted the bot to alter them.
Grok acknowledged that isolated cases had occurred where users requested and received AI-generated images of minors in minimal clothing. The company emphasized that it has safeguards in place, but is working to improve them to block such requests entirely. xAI also emphasized that it prioritizes preventing the creation and dissemination of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), which is strictly prohibited.
The revelation has sparked a global response, with ministers in France reporting the issue to prosecutors and French media regulator Arcom for investigation. The European Union's Digital Services Act is also being reviewed to determine compliance. In India, the IT ministry has ordered X to submit a report detailing its actions to prevent the misuse of Grok to generate and circulate explicit content.
Grok has maintained that it complies with relevant laws, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act in India, and advises users against violating these regulations. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has not commented on the matter, while the Federal Trade Commission has declined to provide a statement.
In response to the controversy, X has removed the offending content from its platform, while xAI has committed to making improvements to its safeguards to prevent similar incidents in the future.
