A 21-year-old man has been killed in Iran's western Lorestan province, marking a significant escalation in the country's ongoing protests over economic woes. The incident occurred in Kuhdasht on Wednesday night, with state television confirming the fatality. The protests, which began on Sunday, have spread across the country, with merchants, shop owners, and students demanding action on high inflation and a falling currency. The Iranian rial has lost around half its value against the dollar in 2025, with inflation reaching 42.5% in December. Iran's clerical rulers are facing a critical moment, as Western sanctions continue to hammer the economy. The government has responded to the unrest with an offer of dialogue, a more conciliatory approach than in previous bouts of unrest. However, activists have reported police flooding the streets and arrests. The Basij militia, a volunteer paramilitary force loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been deployed to suppress the unrest. Thirteen militia members were injured in the clashes, according to a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. Iranian social media users have disputed the authorities' account of the incident, with a video circulating online appearing to show protesters trying to get an injured person into an ambulance. The government has shut down much of the country due to cold weather, declaring a holiday on Wednesday. This is the most significant unrest in Iran since nationwide protests three years ago. Authorities have quashed previous protests with tough security measures and extensive arrests, but President Masoud Pezeshkian has asked the interior minister to listen to the 'legitimate demands' of the demonstrators. Iran's economy has been struggling for years due to U.S. and Western sanctions over the country's nuclear program. Regional tensions led to a 12-day air war with Israel in June, further straining the country's finances. The situation remains volatile, with protests continuing across the country.
