Italian authorities have dealt a significant blow to Hamas's fundraising efforts in the country, arresting nine individuals suspected of diverting millions of euros from charities to the Palestinian militant group. The suspects, accused of belonging to and financing Hamas, allegedly funneled around 7 million euros raised for humanitarian purposes over the past two years to Hamas-linked entities. As part of the operation, police seized assets worth over 8 million euros.
The investigation, which began after suspicious financial transactions were flagged, involved cooperation with Dutch authorities and other EU countries through the EU judicial agency Eurojust. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the authorities for their work, highlighting the importance of disrupting Hamas's fundraising efforts through 'so-called charity organisations'.
The move comes amidst ongoing tensions between Italy and Israel, with Meloni's government facing backlash over its support for Israel's military actions in Gaza. The conflict, which was triggered by a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in October 2023, has resulted in the deaths of over 71,000 people in Gaza, according to the enclave's health ministry.
