In a tragic turn of events, a 40-year-old Singaporean man, Shawn Loo Zhi Jian, has been charged in court for allegedly consuming methamphetamine with renowned lawyer M Ravi, who died on December 24. According to reports, the pair consumed the drug at an Upper Boon Keng Road flat just hours before M Ravi's passing. Jian, an employee of the Bank of America, has been charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act for allegedly arranging a gathering where controlled substances were consumed. He was offered bail at S$20,000 (approximately US$15,578) and is set to return to court on January 2. Eyewitness accounts suggest that M Ravi began showing concerning symptoms after consuming the drugs, and Jian attempted to administer CPR before calling emergency services. Unfortunately, M Ravi was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The authorities have alleged that Jian attempted to dispose of some drugs before the police arrived at the scene. M Ravi, a 25-year veteran of the law, was known for his tireless advocacy for death row inmates and his efforts to abolish the death penalty. He was also a vocal supporter of decriminalising homosexuality and had founded his own law firm in 2019. As news of M Ravi's passing spreads, the legal community is mourning the loss of a passionate advocate. Eugene Thuraisingam, a former counsel of M Ravi's, remembered him as a man who stood up for what he believed in and will be deeply missed by the profession.
