Malaysia Detains Former Army Chief, Four Others in Military Bribery Scandal
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, however, did not name those detained but said they had earlier recorded their statements at the MACC's headquarters. | World News
Malaysian authorities have detained a former army chief and four others in connection with an ongoing bribery investigation involving military procurement contracts. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) plans to seek a court order to hold the former chief and his wives in custody to aid in the investigation. While the agency has not released the names of those detained, sources suggest that former army chief Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan has been questioned in relation to the case. The probe began after a series of raids on firms suspected of involvement in the bribery scheme and the freezing of six bank accounts linked to the suspects. Authorities have also seized RM2.4 million (approximately $591,000) in cash, which was allegedly attempted to be transferred to another location. The MACC has already held two others for further questioning, and the investigation is ongoing.
