Mamdani Defends FDNY Pick as Musk Warns of 'Deadly' Consequences
Zohran Mamdani defended Lillian Bonsignore's appointment against Elon Musk's criticism, highlighting her extensive experience in Emergency Medical Services.
New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is pushing back against Elon Musk's claims that his pick for FDNY commissioner lacks experience. Mamdani selected Lillian Bonsignore, a 31-year veteran of the FDNY who oversaw EMS operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bonsignore is the first openly gay woman to hold the position and the second woman to serve as FDNY commissioner.
Musk had expressed concerns about Bonsignore's appointment, warning that 'people will die' due to the lack of experience. However, Mamdani fired back on social media, highlighting Bonsignore's extensive background in emergency services. 'Experience matters when lives are at stake,' Mamdani tweeted, pointing out that Bonsignore spent over 30 years at EMS, where she addressed at least 70% of all calls coming into the FDNY.
As the new FDNY commissioner, Bonsignore will oversee 11,000 firefighters, 4,500 EMTs, and over 2,000 civilian staff. She brings with her crisis leadership and operational expertise, which Mamdani believes will be invaluable in her new role. Despite Musk's criticism, Bonsignore remains committed to serving the city and its people, and Mamdani is standing by his decision to appoint her as FDNY commissioner.
