A devastating train derailment in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca has left at least 13 people dead and 98 injured. The Interoceanic passenger train, carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members, derailed near the town of Nizanda on Sunday. According to reports, 139 passengers escaped without serious harm, while 36 of the injured were taken to medical facilities for treatment. Among the injured, five are in critical condition, President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed on social media. Mexican authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the derailment, led by the Attorney General's Office. The Interoceanic Train, launched in 2023, is a key component of the Interoceanic Corridor project, aiming to upgrade rail connectivity across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The rail service supports regional economic growth and passenger and cargo transport in southern Mexico. In response to the tragedy, Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara Cruz has offered condolences to the bereaved families and assured support from the state government. Senior officials have been dispatched to the site to assist with rescue efforts and provide aid to the affected families.
