A shocking case of grave robbery has come to light in Pennsylvania, where authorities have arrested a 34-year-old man accused of stealing around 100 sets of human remains from an abandoned cemetery. Jonathan Christ Gerlach was taken into custody on Tuesday night after a month-long investigation into break-ins at Mount Moriah Cemetery, where at least 26 mausoleums and vaults had been forced open since early November.
The investigation led police to Gerlach's home and storage unit in Ephrata, where they found a disturbing collection of human remains, including over 100 skulls, long bones, mummified hands and feet, and two decomposing torsos. The remains were in various states of decomposition, with some hanging from the ceiling and others pieced together on shelves.
According to authorities, Gerlach targeted older burials at the cemetery, which is considered the country's largest abandoned burial ground. The break-ins centered on sealed vaults and mausoleums containing remains of people who had been buried for decades. Gerlach was arrested as he walked back to his car with a crowbar and a burlap bag containing the mummified remains of two small children and three skulls.
Gerlach has been charged with 100 counts each of abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property, as well as multiple counts of desecrating a public monument and other related offenses. He is being held on a $1 million bond and has no listed lawyer. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with authorities still trying to determine the motivations behind Gerlach's actions.
