A powerful series of storm systems is heading towards the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe regions this weekend, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions. According to forecasters, a cold front is expected to reach the Sierra late Friday, lowering snow levels to around 6,000 feet and resulting in accumulating snow through Sunday. The Lake Tahoe region is forecast to experience continuous snow from Friday evening, with sustained snowfall expected to continue through the weekend. National Weather Service meteorologist Tyler Salas explained that the snow will be driven by multiple storm systems, with one stronger storm followed by smaller systems contributing to the total snowfall. Residents and travelers in the area can expect significant snow accumulation, with 1-2 feet of snow predicted at elevations near 7,000 feet by Sunday and about a foot possible around 6,000 feet. At lake level, snow accumulation is expected to range from several inches to less than a foot. Travelers are advised to exercise caution, as Interstate 80 and Highway 50 are expected to see periods of heavy snow and reduced visibility from Saturday through Sunday. Additionally, freezing rain could create slick road conditions earlier in the period. The National Weather Service has also issued warnings for other regions, including the Northeast and Midwest, where snowy and cold conditions are expected. Heavy rain and storms are forecast to bring a flash flooding threat across the West, particularly in southern California. Winter weather impacts have already been reported in parts of the country, with snow squalls and cold temperatures affecting areas of the Midwest and Northeast on New Year’s Day.
